  • The MIDIs!

Who? You are 9-19 years old and attend the Kulturskolan, or take private lessons. Or you are an adult, a former Cultural School student, or of course you  are simply a happy amateur.

Playing the cello is not that difficult!

Dear MIDI Cellists

We are delighted to invite you to our upcoming Cello Festival!
As a MIDI participant, you are at the very heart of the festival — musically, socially, and artistically.

The MIDI course is the core festival course and offers a rich, full experience across three full days of music-making, inspiration, and community.

What the MIDI Course Includes (Basic Course Fee)

By enrolling in the MIDI course, you receive:

  • Three full festival days
This is an expansion from last year:
3 full days instead of 2, plus an extra 3 hours
Daily start at 9:00 (instead of 10:00)
9 additional hours of activities compared to last year
  • Cello sectionals with festival teachers
  • Participation in the full cello orchestra
  • Rehearsals and performances in two large orchestra concerts
    (Saturday & Sunday)
  • All shared festival activities, including:
    • the Ask Me Anything session
    • attending the teachers’ concert 8 CELLI! on Friday evening

  • A strong social and artistic festival atmosphere — learning, playing, and connecting with other cellists throughout the days

This means that even without booking any extras, MIDI students receive a complete, high-quality festival experience with substantial playing time, ensemble work, and concerts.

Optional Extras (Booked Separately)

In addition to the core course, students may choose to book:

Private Lessons

  • Individual lessons with festival teachers

This is optional and booked separately, according to interest and availability

Chamber Music

  • Chamber groups receive two coaching sessions
  • Participation is optional and based on student interest
  • Additional opportunities (also optional):
    • Up to four chamber groups may be selected to give short concerts at elderly care homes, accompanied by their teacher
    • Chamber groups may also have the opportunity to perform in the first half of one of the main festival concerts (Saturday or Sunday)

This is what your schedule may look like:

 Friday:

  •  Arrival in the morning, teacher's welcome concert followed by a combination of chamber music coaching, private lessons and sectional rehearsals. Teachers from the cultural schools are very welcome to join in and play today! There will be different group constellations in the morning, and you (children and adults) can "sneak" away for 1 hour if you want to listen/watch one of the advanced classes.
  •  After lunch, the day continues with cello orchestra rehearsals.
  •  After dinner, we enjoy the teachers' concert in Skanör church, 8CELLI!, together.

 Saturday:

  •  Morning: private lessons, chamber music coaching and sectionals.
  •  Afternoon: Orchestra rehearsal with a long break in the middle.
  •  Evening: Student concert, Cellists of the Fututre, in Stora Hammar Church, where you get to perform!

 Sunday

  •  On Sunday morning we focus on a mix of lessons and preparatory rehearsals for the big Final Concert in the afternoon, this time in the beautiful concert hall of Vellinges Kulturskola. All three levels – MINIs, MIDIs and MEGAs – will participate, along with elements of chamber music groups and teacher duets.
  •  After lunch, there will be a fun AMA (Ask Me Anything) time with the teachers – who can come up with the best question that will make everyone think? Or that will make everyone laugh!
  •  After the last concert at 4 pm we gather for dinner at 6 pm and a warm closing.

In Short

The MIDI course fee covers a full, expanded festival program with:

  • more hours than previous years,
  • daily high-level coaching,
  • orchestra rehearsals and performances,
  • and access to communit festival events.

Private lessons and chamber music are offered as flexible additions, allowing each student and family to tailor the experience to their interests and budget.

 Repertoire

The student concert consists of elements of cello chamber music in the first half, and the cello orchestra after the break.

The orchestra will play a selection of the pieces we will have rehearsed on Friday and Saturday (but not necessarily all of them). We are very proud of the repertoire we have managed to get this year, as it will be as much fun to listen to as it is to play, no matter which part you choose – and there are parts for everyone: from the very simple rhythmic parts in cello 4 and 5, to the more challenging ones in cello 1 or 2. And best of all, we will be accompanied by Malmö Opera's own percussionist, Niklas Holmberg!

 Teachers - MIDIs

Lyssa Davidsson, Annette Helmers, Johanna Larsson, John Löfgren, Ulrika Mårtensson, Viktor Nordliden, Jane Petersson, Johan Theorin

 Practical details:

  •  Coffee is available every day
  •  Meal packages are available for purchase separately.

We eat food made especially for us, at Sundsgymnasiet, next to Vellinge Kulturskola.

We have tried to build in breaks between classes where you can take a short walk outside, or go and visit Nadine Nilsson, from Nilsson's Violin Studio, to learn about cello care, or take a short trip to the cello accessories market. There will be a coffee corner in the Foyer, and quite a lot of free time around meals.

For those who do not have access to their own car, we try to arrange transportation to the churches either by carpooling or by minibus.

The number of places is limited, register early!

We really look forward to meeting you and creating an unforgettable experience together!

Don't forget to buy your meal package!
